the ultimate badassPosted: April 12, 2011
Once again, Jesus Diaz proves he is the most interesting writer Gizmodo has. These days, his articles are about all I read there anyway. He’s a fan of many things, like LEGO and Apple, so I enjoy a lot of what he has to say.
His latest article on Yuri Gagarin simply blew my mind – I can’t imagine doing what this man did. Climbing into a very untested rocket with a pulse of only 64 bpm, realizing you are the first human to see Earth in its entirety, then phoning Moscow from a Russian farmhouse afterwards to tell them where you landed. It’s unbelievably awesome, and a credit to our species. Despite the incredible incompetence of the Soviet space program, he made it. It’s truly a tragedy that I grew up learning how amazing Shepard and Armstrong were (and they were great as well) but glossing over Gagarin as “the competition.” His was one of the greatest accomplishments anyone will ever make, and he deserves to be remembered.
“Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People of the world, let us safeguard and enhance this beauty — not destroy it!” – Yuri Gagarin
